What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud Computing is the delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.

Public Clouds are the most common way of deploying cloud computing. The cloud resources (like servers and storage) are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider and delivered over the Internet. Microsoft Azure is an example of a public cloud. With a public cloud, all hardware, software, and other supporting infrastructure is owned and managed by the cloud provider. In a public cloud, users share the same hardware, storage, and network devices with other organizations or cloud ‘tenants’. Users access services and manage accounts through a web browser. Public cloud deployments are frequently used to provide web-based email, online office applications, storage, and testing and development environments.

Cloud computing services, often called the cloud computing stack, fall into 4 categories: Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platform as a service (PaaS), Software as a service (SaaS), and Functions as a service (FaaS).

Innovation

Organizations can rapidly innovate, leveraging the cloud to create new products and services, or incorporating new channels and options. The cloud allows innovators to develop new operating capabilities by rearranging their ecosystems to shift industry economics in their favour. One of the major risks innovators face is the possibility of a “fast follower” competitor applying the power of the cloud to improve upon an innovator’s original innovation.

If your enterprise decides to become a cloud-enabled innovator, consider taking the following actions:

  • Use cloud to expand your product/service feature set while improving ease-of-use.

  • Capitalize on cloud’s capability to support sophisticated customer journeys to design customer interactions individually tailored to user preferences and situational context.

  • Leverage cloud’s agility to anticipate your customers’ needs through rapid prototyping, development, and deployment of new products and services.

  • Implement a cloud that reaches new target customers in your incumbent industry and markets.

  •  Adopt a cloud that facilitates your entry into a new industry or market.
